Overview
To connect an Instagram account with BotBonnie:
- Ensure that you have one of the following types of Instagram accounts:
- An Instagram Professional account for a business, or
- An Instagram Professional account for a creator with fewer than 500k followers.
- Link your Instagram account to a Facebook Page.
- If you don’t have a Facebook Page, create one.
- Ensure you have admin access to the Facebook Page.
Follow these steps to connect your Instagram account to BotBonnie.
Part 1. Switch to Instagram professional account and connect to Facebook Page
The steps are slightly different between the mobile app version and the desktop version of Instagram.
Mobile version
Follow the instructions below if you are setting up from a mobile device.
- If your Instagram account is already a professional account, skip to step 3 to connect it to a Facebook Page.
- If you are using an Instagram personal account, start from step 1 below to switch to a professional business account.
- In your Instagram account, click the menu icon in the top-right corner, click Settings > Account, and click Switch to professional account.
- Click Continue multiple times to go through Instagram's feature introduction, select a category that describes your business, select Business, and click Next.
- Now you need to connect the Instagram account to your Facebook Page. You need to log into a Facebook account that has administrator access to the Facebook Page.
- If you are continuing from step 2, click Log into your Facebook to log in, click Continue, select the Facebook Page and click Next.
- If your Instagram account is already a professional account and you just need to connect it to a Facebook Page, click Edit profile to go to your Instagram profile page. Click Page, click Connect an existing Page, select the Facebook Page you want to connect to, and click Done.
You will see your Facebook Page listed on your Instagram profile page.
Proceed to Part 2. Connect Instagram account to BotBonnie.
Desktop version
Follow the instructions below if you are setting up from a desktop.
- If your Instagram account is already a professional account, skip to step 4.
- If you are using an Instagram personal account, start from step 1 below to switch to a professional business account.
- In your Instagram account, click More in the lower-left corner, click Settings, and click Switch to professional account.

- Select Business, click Next to go through Instagram's feature introduction, select a category that describes your business, and click Done.
- Click Done to finish.

- Now you need to connect the Instagram account to your Facebook Page. Go to your Facebook Page, click the profile picture of your Facebook Page, and click Settings & privacy.

- Select Settings and click Linked Accounts.

- Select Instagram and click Connect Account.

- Click Connect.

- Make sure Allow access to Instagram messages in Inbox is enabled and click Confirm. This allows your Instagram account to send private messages to users who have commented.

- Your Instagram account is now connected to a Facebook Page. Click Done.

Proceed to Part 2 below.
Part 2. Connect Instagram account to BotBonnie
- Click the app launcher icon > Common settings, then click Channels on the navigation sidebar.

- In the Instagram for Business section, click + Connect Instagram account. If the Instagram for Business section isn't visible, make sure that you selected Instagram in the Filter by platform dropdown.

- Make sure you are logged in using a Facebook account that has administrator access to the Facebook Page you used for connection in part 1.
- Select the Instagram account to connect with BotBonnie and click Next.

- Select the Facebook Page that is associated with the Instagram account and click Next.

- Grant all permissions to BotBonnie and click Done.

- Click OK to return to the Personalization Cloud console.

- On the Personalization Cloud console, click Connect next to your Instagram account to finish the connection.

You will see a "Connected" status displayed in green.

Test your connection
- From the left menu, go to Content > AI rules, then click + Add AI Rule.

Send any message to your Instagram professional account and you should see the module you selected as the reply.
Troubleshoot
If your Instagram account is not successfully connected to BotBonnie or your bot is not working on Instagram, here are some possible reasons.
Your Instagram account is not properly connected to your Facebook Page
To troubleshoot:
Mobile
- On the Instagram app, click Edit profile and check if your Instagram account is connected to the Facebook Page. If not, follow the mobile instructions starting from step 3.
- In your Instagram account, click the menu icon in the top-right corner, click Settings > Privacy > Messages, and make sure Allow access to messages is enabled.
Desktop
- Log in to your Facebook Page, check if your Instagram account is connected and make sure Allow access to Instagram messages in Inbox is enabled. If not, follow the desktop instructions starting from step 4.

Your Instagram account is not connected to the BotBonnie bot
To troubleshoot:
- Go to the Personalization Cloud console and go to Integrations > Channels > Instagram for Business.
- Try clicking Reset permissions and re-grant access to BotBonnie.
- If the Instagram account is already connected to another bot, you can click Connect to connect it to the current bot.
